Design Ethics with Mike Monteiro

Talk and Workshop

Like every other human being on the planet we share, designers are part of the social contract. By choosing to be a designer you are choosing to affect the people who come in contact with your work. Learn how to tell if your work will hurt or help those people and how to measure social impact alongside shareholder value.

Britelite Immersive

Interactive Installation

Philanthropost is a highly interactive exhibit that’s part sculpture and part design storytelling outpost imagined and created by Britelite Immersive for Design Week 2018. Product and architectural design can facilitate important conversations and Philanthropost seeks to create a meeting point where groups using design to impact the community of the Greater Bay Area for good can virtually demonstrate their initiatives. Visitors to the exhibit will have the opportunity to explore the stories and fund the projects in order to make them happen.

UNDISCIPLINED: Design, Commerce and Culture

A Conversation with the founders of Indicate Design Groupe and DC Shoes

Richard Hansen (Indicate Design Groupe) and Damon Way (DC Shoes, Incase, FACT.) in conversation moderated by Philip Wood. There are many paths to success and many ways to become a successful designer. One way is more traditional: school, apprenticeship, job. And then there’s the path that Rich Hansen and Damon Way took: Two kids who had a vision to make it happen on their own terms, creating and producing work before anyone gave them license to. Without any boundaries, their creativity thrived and in this conversation, we will be discussing street culture, DIY business, how punk engenders entrepreneurship, and how risk-taking with action sports lead into risks taken with design and business. We’ll find a lot to be inspired by from these self-made design world heroes including how maybe your college days were misspent or not misspent enough.

Airbnb Design Presents: Exposition of Chaos

An Interactive Experience

In Exposition of Chaos, we’ll examine modern chaos—the environmental, social, digital, emotional, and political—and the wide-ranging designs that address it. In a world of political unrest, health crises, and lack of equal democratic access, design plays a critical role in addressing these global challenges. Will you freeze, or activate in ambiguity? We challenge you to find out.
