San Francisco Design Week Artist Installations
San Francisco has long been a place on the of avant-garde of artistic development, but in recent decades, it has become increasingly difficult for artists to live and work in the Bay Area. For 2018, we’re kicking off an ongoing initiative to include more artists to create visually provoking art installations specifically for the festival. Design Week is a space where we hope to bridge art and design, and demonstrate to attendees the important and transformative power of art in our community.
Hotel Zetta San Francisco is partnering with Exit Reality to unveil an exciting new virtual reality experience for guests and locals. Set in the lobby of Hotel Zetta – guests are invited to step inside a custom-outfitted virtual reality space, resembling an Airstream of tomorrow, where they can immerse themselves in a variety of out-of-this-world experiences.

Zetta Murals is a project that originally began in April 2015 as an Instagram contest #ZettaMurals, expanded into what is now considered the most exciting and unique hotel art installation in San Francisco. The 7-story stairwell served as the perfect blank canvas to inspire local talent to tag, shape and paint their most creative designs, the outcome was astounding.The 7-Story Canvas exhibit is now open for public viewing featuring walls worth of original mural art from contemporary muralist luminaries Buff Monster, Apexer, Steiner, Deb, Elle, Dirty Bandits, Mike Tyau, Pemex, and Griffin.
California Varietals an exhibition of new California design and makers organized by StudioCO, an Oakland-based design firm, and Baana. Curated by Trent Still, the exhibition will focus on expanding the narrative around California design by assembling work ranging from architecture, furniture, ceramic to product design that celebrate traditional craft, technology and the quintessential California aesthetic. Philanthropost is a highly interactive exhibit that’s part sculpture and part design storytelling outpost imagined and created by Britelite Immersive for Design Week 2018. Product and architectural design can facilitate important conversations and Philanthropost seeks to create a meeting point where groups using design to impact the community of the Greater Bay Area for good can virtually demonstrate their initiatives. Visitors to the exhibit will have the opportunity to explore the stories and fund the projects in order to make them happen.
Design Challenge for K12 Youth: SFDW Edition
A Design Challenge is an interactive design workshop that offers an exciting co-participatory, multi-disciplinary opportunity to design collaboratively with professionals and area youth from the San Francisco Columbia Park Boys & Girls Clubhouse. During the Design Learning Challenge, youth will work alongside professional designers to create solutions using the design thinking process on a the topic of safety. This 2-hour community event will conclude with a shared experience where students and professionals present their design results together. Facilitator Jacinda Walker of designExplorr, will lead designers and students through a process of critical thinking, ideation, and prototyping of solutions.We are looking for volunteers today to be a design leader at the Design Learning Challenge which will be held on June 7th from 2:30 – 5:00 PM. OlivettiWorld: The Global Legacy of an Italian Maker
Today, Silicon Valley may be the center of innovative business culture, but the model for this arguably dates back to Italy when Adriano Olivetti took over his father’s typewriter business in the 1930s. A series of events under the collective title of OlivettiWorld, is expected to revisit the key values of the Italian company’s experience – an experience that was at once cultural, social, political, and entrepreneurial. Mission Bicycle: Official SFDW Bicycle designed by Office
We are excited to present the Official San Francisco Design Week bicycle which borrows visual identity from Office’s theme for SFDW 2018 and incorporates it into a visually stunning, rideable, piece of art. The single speed commuter is as functional as it is beautiful, featuring integrated lighting and custom selected components by Office in collaboration with Mission Bicycle Company. Mission Bicycle is hosting a “Design Cycle” group ride on June 9th from 12:00-2:00 pm followed by a “Design Cycle” After Party at Black Hammer Brewery in SOMA.
Creativity Explored Installation
Creativity Explored is a non-profit art center and gallery in San Francisco where artists with developmental disabilities have been creating, exhibiting, and selling their art for 35 years. Community members will donate materials which will be used for an art show happening during SF Design Week. The art shown during the event will be made by Creativity Explored artists from donated materials gathered during a Bay Area Creative Studios Spring Cleaning Drive organized by In/Visible Talks. The art from this collaboration will hang in the Creativity Explored gallery from June 2nd to the 17th. If you haven’t been to Creativity Explored, you must take advantage of this unique opportunity to get familiar with their programming.
